Addressing formats
In the example, the number 3 is the block number; and the number 4 is the house number. This order - with a hyphen in between - is of vital importance: 3 - 4, not 4 - 3.
Each ku (ward, e.g. Minato-ku) is divided into cho, which are succesfully numbered (e.g. Shibaura I-chome, Shibaura 2-chome, etc.).
The postal code contains seven digits (three digits and four digits separated by a hyphen: NNN-NNNN0) and is placed to the right of the city. This is a new code, introduced in 1998.
The new code provides a much greater level of sortation. With the old code, the country was divided into 5,000 codes, as compared to 116,000 with the new system.
